Return to Solar Hot Water Systems
Solar DHW Indirect Pressurized Closed Loop System

The indirect solar hot water system is a typical design for northern climates where freezing temperatures are common. A mixture of water/glycol is circulated in a pressurized, closed loop system. The mixture is pushed by a small pump through the solar panels (flat plate collectors) where it is heated and then through the solar hot water storage tank.  A heat exchanger is integrated into this storage tank so that heat from the water/glycol mixture is transferred to the domestic water but the two systems never mix. Then the water/glycol mixture returns to the pump.

When hot water is called for elsewhere in the house, the the solar hot water storage tank provides the existing water heater with preheated domestic water.
